A Week of Dance, Nature & Connection

Contango is a unique meeting of Contact Improvisation, Argentine Tango and somatic movement. Through touch, movement and musicality, we explore communication, creativity and connection in a dynamic and playful way. The practice invites us to rediscover the joy of improvisation and the pleasure of sensing and moving together.

At the heart of Contango is reciprocity: learning to listen and respond, to support and be supported, to guide and be guided. As we dance, we often experience greater ease in movement, increased body awareness, confidence, wellbeing and a renewed sense of trust and vitality.

More than a retreat and more than a holiday, this is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a living community of sensing and moving, recharge your energy, reconnect with nature, and experience a week where dance becomes a practice of wellbeing, creativity and trust.

A Week at Monterosi (Anghiari, Tuscany)

Each workshop day includes:
• Two Contango workshops (2 hours each)
• Movement, touch, musicality and improvisation
• Individual, partner and group practices
• Time for rest, integration and dance evenings self-organised by the participants

Open to contact improvisers, tango dancers, movers and curious beginners. No previous experience is required. You can join alone or with a partner.

Nestled in the Tuscan hills near Anghiari, Monterosi offers a beautiful setting for dance and renewal: an outdoor dance platform overlooking the valley, a warm wooden studio, fresh-water swimming, delicious Italian food and the restorative rhythm of life in nature.

Stay in a tent, caravan or shared accommodation, enjoy meals outdoors, and spend the evenings dancing, walking, sharing music, relaxing or simply enjoying the Tuscan sky together.

Raffaele Rufo

Raffaele Rufo (PhD) is a dance artist, a facilitator of artistic and cultural processes, and an independent scholar committed to community and land regeneration. His artistic background is entwined with the Australian ensemble ‘Liminal Theatre and Performance’ and with the Argentine Tango dance, which he later combined with Contact Improvisation, Body Weather and somatic movement. After focusing his performance practice on Melbourne’s public urban spaces, Raffaele has explored the questions of roots and exile in Milan and Rome through the ecosomatic relation with the nonhuman and matter. His ongoing and recent creative projects include ‘Rituali di Pa(e)ssaggio’, ‘Danced by the Tree’, ‘Return of the Centaurs’, ‘Ecokinetics’ and ‘Ecosomatic Persephone’. He is co-founder of the International Forum for Eco-Embodied Arts (IFEEA) and collaborates with Teatro del Lido di Ostia as artistic director of ‘La Selva’ Residency. Raffaele holds a Phd in dance and performance from Deakin University and his research has been published in academic journals and book collections.
